In an arc-flashover, the current always travels where it is not intended to be in the first place, it may protrude from one phase to another phase or even from one phase to the ground/earth. This can happen easily in the case of low voltage open air arcs, but what if we consider a medium voltage switchgear?
Eaton was the first major North American manufacturer to design, test, and manufacture arc-resistant switchgear in accordance with EEMAC G14.1. We now offer Type 2 and 2B arc-resistant switchgear assemblies, designed and tested in accordance with the IEEE C37.20.7, with Type VCP-W drawout vacuum circuit breakers.
Generally, this type of switchgear will come with flaps that open under the intense pressure of arcing energy. The flaps allow the heated gases of an arc flash and the pressure to safely vent out of the enclosure and away from the operator. When venting arc flash gases outside of the switchgear room is necessary, extra duct work is used.
The provision of reliable power in such buildings is reliant upon the low-voltage distribution switchboards that lie at the heart of the electrical installation. Demands placed upon these switchboards, particularly as operations and infrastructures expand over time, leave them vulnerable to arc flashes.
