More than 100 planning applications for battery energy storage systems were filed in the UK between April and June 2025, covering a combined 8.4GW of capacity. That is more than twice as much as in the same quarter last year.
The figure comes from Solar Media Market Research's Battery Storage: UK Pipeline & Completed Assets Database report. It is the most large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) approvals by capacity since July, when around 5GW/10GWh was given the go-ahead by either local authorities or central government.
It drew 171 proposals totalling 52.6GW of discharge capacity. Li-ion battery energy storage systems (BESS) dominated the initial submissions with 112 projects, making up nearly three-fourths (38.6GW) of the total proposed capacity.
Regarding full applications, over 1.6GWh of capacity has been submitted so far in 2025, an increase of 10% compared to the same period last year. Over 43GWh was approved in 2024, an increase of 35% from 2023 and this year has already seen over 8.9GWh of approvals, including one of the largest consented projects in the UK so far.
