Sustainability & Climate Goals: Reducing carbon emissions, increasing forest coverage, and advancing renewable energy. Private Sector & Trade Expansion: Enhancing foreign direct investment (FDI),
Since 2007, Ghana has become an electricity exporter and since 2011 an exporter of crude oil, and natural gas, and a generator of electricity by thermal energy, hydropower, solar energy and renewable energies since 2012.
Ghana's thermal power generation is fueled largely by natural gas, but occasionally uses light crude oil and diesel. Ghana exports power to Togo, Benin, and Burkina Faso. The Government of Ghana remains heavily involved in the energy sector, with state entities having a controlling presence in the value chain.
Ghana's energy sector is such that the government is involved in the processes of energy production, distribution, and trade. Energy is sourced from both renewables and fossil fuels, which form the basis of the electricity supply and consumption in the country.
Ghana export products are channeled through its two principal seaports – Tema and Takoradi. The turnaround time at these ports is one of the fastest in West Africa and as such, many importers and exporters prefer to dock their ships there. In 2016, Ghana shipped goods worth US$ 10.7 billion around the world.
